A group of skaters representing Katy had a big accomplishment, topping teams from around the world in the Red Bull Terminal Takeover to win a huge event.

The Terminal Takeover, a four year tradition that Red Bull has hosted, which brought pro and amateur teams from around the world that represent skate shops from their home area together to compete at the Louis Armstrong International Airport terminal, which has been abandoned since 2019 and for the past four years has been turned into a dreamland for skaters through red bulls efforts with the terminal takeover competition.

Teams were invited to the airport in April and spent three days making a skate edit showcasing their best tricks, creativity and ability. The best video was chosen by the public and in the end, team Katy came away the winners of the event after a great skate edit won over voters. Katy won the event over teams from Nashville TN, Pensacola FL, Fairfax FA, Baton Rouge LA, Birmingham AL, New Orleans LA, Tupelo MS, Katy TX, Durham NC, Milwaukee WI and Aichi Japan.

Katy’s team represented the Brick Skate Shop on Fry Rd. and the team that consisted of Taylor Jett, Anthony Negrete, Jason Bastian, Geovani Sabillon, Jonathan Cosentino, Charlie Frazier, Sean Spofford and Jonathan Bastian. For everyone there it was a special experience.

“I’m from the Philippines, I speak a different language, and we have an international shop now with Japan,” said Margie Didal, part of team Japan and a newcomer to the competition. “We don’t speak Japanese, but we can communicate through skating. It’s crazy how skateboarding can help people communicate.”   

The red bull pro skaters that attended the event rode with the amateur skate crews, including Katy’s, and competed in “cash for tricks” in the unique setting of the Luis Armstrong Airport. The contests included the highest sticker contest, the longest rail grind and best trick competition off an escalator, a consistent proving ground each year for the new teams that reach the finals of the competition.
