Katy Responds makes progress on Rodriguez home damaged by Harvey
Local nonprofit Katy Responds is on its way to getting 75-year-old widow Karen Rodriquez back in her home – more than eight years after she was displaced from her Katy home by Hurricane Harvey. As the Katy Times reported in July of this year, Rodriguez and her husband tried to repair the damage themselves, only to be scammed by a con tractor who took $20,000 and vanished. While they fought the case in court, Rodriguez’s husband passed away from cancer. With her home still unlivable, missing floors, walls, a kitchen, and bathrooms, she moved in with her son. But now, with his growing family, she’s being asked to move out. She had nowhere else to go and turned to Katy Responds. The nonprofit has recently completed the installation of insulation and are now putting up drywall. “Although there is much more work to be done, it is really starting to come together,” said Eliza Willhoit, Katy Responds Communications Coordinator in an email to the Katy Times. “It is always exciting to watch a house transform during our repair process, especially when it began with only studs.”
