Katy ISD, Royal athletes clinch spot at state track and field meet

Katy ISD had four athletes earn gold medals last week at the Class 6A Region III meet last week, while sending a number of athletes to the state meet after a strong performance from the district.

Katy ISD, Royal athletes clinch spot at state track and field meet

Katy ISD had four athletes earn gold medals last week at the Class 6A Region III meet last week, while sending a number of athletes to the state meet after a strong performance from the district.

Janey Campbell was one of the biggest medal winners for the district. The Seven Lakes sophomore earned a gold in the discus after throwing 145, and she also took home a silver medal in the shot put with a throw of 48-8.75. 

Chineye Uzoh joined her Seven Lakes classmate as a gold medalist, taking first in the high jump with a jump of 5.08 feet. Seven Lakes’ Max Austin was the third gold medalist from the district, winning the boys pole vault with a jump of 16 feet.

Tompkins’ Jayden Keys once again was a huge medal getter, advancing to state in three events. Keys came in second in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 13.47 seconds while also getting a silver medal in the long jump with a jump of just over 24 feet, he also placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.55 seconds.

Katy’s Elizabeth Brooks placed fourth in the girls 800-meters while Jordan’s Tiyan Ogbeide placed fifth as both advanced to the state meet. Mayde Creek’s Elijah Ferguson advanced by earning a silver in the 400-meter with a time of 47.86 seconds.

Paetow’s DJ Hicks earned a spot at state by getting a bronze medal with a throw of 186.11. Two girls pole vaulters clinched state berths, as Taylor’s Addison Schroeder and Cinco Ranch’s Bella Borresen finished first and second with jumps of 11.09 11.06 at the regional meet to advance. Katy’s Damacio Hooks rounded out the selections from the district with a fourth place finish in the triple jump, getting a jump of 48.00 to clinch a spot at state.

Royal also sent a number of athletes to the state meet, as both the girls 400-meter and 800-meter relays finished first at the Class 4A Regional Meet, with Adrianna Prophet Smith, Diamond Barrett, Airriona Jackson and Erica Grant being the runners on both relays, while Diamond Berrett took home a gold in the 100-meter dash and Erica Grant finished third in the 100-meter dash to clinch spots at state. On the boys side, J’Marcus Wilkerson won the high jump for Royal to advance to state as well.
