Thursday
Taylor (3-5, 2-4) vs. Paetow (4-4, 3-3), 6 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Did not play
- Taylor fought to stay in the playoff picture for as long as it could this season.
The Mavericks were in a number of games and stayed with Jordan for three quarters this past week, but a 34-14 loss leaves the Mustangs on the outside looking in with two weeks remaining, as they would need an improbable number of things to happen to make the playoffs.
The Taylor offense did its best to hold its own against Jordan, Joe Jefferson threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 26 yards and Dante Archie caught six passes for 60 yards and two scores while rushing for 61 yards.
But the Taylor defense was unable to contain Jordan, giving up 28 points in the second and third quarters. Taylor allowed 400 yards and three touchdowns through the air and 173 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while allowing three different receivers to get over 90 yards receiving on the day.
It will be a much different offense Taylor faces this week and they will need to stop a strong Paetow run game, while needing their offensive line to be able to handle Paetow up front if they are to come out with a win.
Paetow on the other hand, kept itself in the playoff race with a win over Seven Lakes, as the Panthers sit a game back of fourth place and the final playoff spot in District 19-6A with two games remaining.
It was a badly needed win for the Panthers, who need to win out the rest of the way to get in the playoffs. It was the pass game that really opened things up for the Panthers, Koby Truehill threw for 207 yards and three touchdowns, but will need to be better with some of his decision making in the next game, as he also threw two interceptions. Justin Stevenson had 96 yards and a score receiving while Jason Blue had 54 yards and a touchdown and Derrick Johnson had 44 yards and a score. The Paetow run game had a decent day as well, as the team had 165 yards on the ground, with Damyrion Phillips leading the way with 71 yards and a score while Johnson had 62 yards rushing.
The key for Paetow in this game will be containing the Taylor run game and Joe Jefferson’s ability to extend plays out of the pocket, while the Paetow offense will try to build off it’s run game and hit big plays in play action as it did against Seven Lakes.
Katy (8-0, 6-0) vs. Seven Lakes (1-7, 1-5), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Katy 45, Seven Lakes 3
- Katy went into its biggest matchup so far this year, and had one of their best performances of the year, easily beating Cinco Ranch to stay undefeated on the year.
It was a huge game on both sides of the ball for Katy. Offensively, it was the run game that led the way as always. Seth Davis and Dallas Glass once again did their thing, Davis ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns while Glass ran for 120 yards and two scores. Caleb Koger also did his thing through the air, throwing for 133 yards and three touchdowns, with Micah Koenig catching three passes for 56 and one touchdown.
Katy’s defense meanwhile, held Cinco Ranch’s high powered offense in check for most of the day and forced the Cougars into three turnovers, including two interceptions as the Tigers dominated from beginning to end.
The win wrapped up a district championship for Katy with two weeks remaining and allows the team to turn to improving and getting ready for the playoffs, as the Tigers have already faced the tougher opponents in district play.
Seven Lakes was unable to get back in the win column last week, losing to Paetow, and the teams prospects of getting a win look even dimmer this week going up against Katy.
The Spartans offense was stopped the entire night by Paetow, as they barely managed to clear 100 yards of total offense in the game. Tanner Perez threw for 14 yards and a touchdown, while Donye Lake led the running game with 30 yards and a score and Barrett Hudson was held to just 14 yards on the ground.
The Seven Lakes defense did what it could, forcing Paetow into three turnovers, including getting two interceptions, but at the end of the day the Paetow run game and play action as too much as the Panthers got over 350 yards of total offense in the win.
Seven Lakes will be looking to find something to build on going into the final week of the season, and hoping its defense can put up a fight against the Tigers run game.
Friday
Morton Ranch (5-3, 3-3) vs. Mayde Creek (2-7, 0-5), 6 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Morton Ranch 43, Mayde Creek 17
- Morton Ranch’s bye week came at an extremely important time for the team.
Following a loss to Tompkins in which the team was unable to keep up with the Falcons and dealt with a number of injuries, the Mavericks got a week off to heal up and get their players back as they head into a battle for the final playoff spot in the final two weeks of the district season.
The Mavericks were unable to get things going through the air against Tompkins, only throwing for 105 yards, while Santana Scott carried the load on the ground, rushing for 142 yards and a score, while Jairon Davis led the team in the receiving department with 43 yards and a score.
The Morton Ranch defense meanwhile was unable to put up a fight against the Tompkins run game that accounted for 177 yards and four touchdowns, while the Morton Ranch special teams gave up two scores as well.
Now getting back toward healthy, the Rams will have to get back to how they were playing before the Tompkins game and put together a strong performance against the Rams.
Mayde Creek again lost last week and remains winless in district play, but the Rams did put together one of their stronger performances in district, coming against one of the stronger teams in District 19-6A.
The most encouraging signs for Mayde Creek came on the offensive end, as the Rams had their best day passing the ball all season behind sophomore quarterback Cole Jensen. Jensen completed 33 of 43 passes in the game, good for a 76% completion percentage and threw for three touchdowns and an interception. Beau Bankston was a huge factor in the offense, catching 14 passes for 129 yards and two scores, while Zaylen Cormier had 84 yards receiving and a touchdown. The rushing game never got going, but Jerimiah Hill had 13 carries for 41 yards to lead the team.
Defensively though, the Rams continued to struggle, giving up 305 yards and five scores on the ground and 95 yards and a touchdown through the air.
For Mayde Creek, the key in this game will be to continue their success through the air against a team that has been susceptible to the pass attack so far this season, while putting together a better performance on defense and containing the Morton Ranch ground game. It would be a big win for the Rams, who are still looking for their first district win of the year.
Tompkins (6-2, 4-2) vs. Jordan (5-3, 4-2), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Did not play
- After a slow start to the district season, Tompkins has continued to improve and find ways to win games.
Last week that came against Mayde Creek, as the Falcons continued to use a dominant run game and run defense to beat the Rams and stay tied for third in district with two weeks remaining.
The Falcons run game was spearheaded by their junior duo of Caleb Blocker and Wyatt Young. Blocker was very strong on the day, rushing for 144 yards on 22 carries for three touchdowns, while Young only needed for carries to rush for 144 yards and two touchdowns, as he averaged 36 yards per carry. Young also completed five of six passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, with Matthew Ogunrin leading the team with two receptions for 48 yards.
The Tompkins run defense was once again very strong, holding Mayde Creek to 63 total yards, but the Falcons pass defense did allow 290 yards through the air in the game.
The Falcons will try to use their strong run game and big offensive line to continue to dominate up front against Jordan, but the teams pass defense will need to be better against a very explosive Warriors offense.
Jordan comes off a huge offensive performance last week in a win over Taylor, as the Warriors dominated in both the pass and run game.
Colin Willetts had the best passing day of his career thus far in the game, as he completed 22 of 30 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns and an interception. Andrew Marsh had a big game receiving, catching seven passes for 124 and two touchdowns while Deacon Stanfield had 103 yards receiving and a touchdown on four catches and Bryce Coffie also caught for passes for 94 yards. The Jordan run game had a good game as well, with Chad Gasper rushing for 123 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.
The Jordan defense also did a good job limiting a strong Taylor run game to 79 yards, but did allow 207 yards through the air.
It will be a much harder task for Jordan this week, and they will need to again be strong against the run on defense, while the offense will need to again be explosive and strong through the air.
