The Texas Army National Guard and the Texas High School Coaches Association released the 2019-20 Academic All-State Recipients for tennis, golf, track, softball and baseball on May 1 and 84 student-athletes from the Katy area cracked the lists.

Katy High School was the leader with 35 of their student-athletes being honored, followed by Cinco Ranch (16) and Seven Lakes (15). Tompkins had seven student-athletes make lists, Taylor and Brookshire Royal each landed four and Morton Ranch rounded out the list with three.

“We understand that students’ performance in the classroom can sometimes be difficult to manage while participating in athletics, but their hard work has not gone unnoticed,” said an announcement on the THSCA website. “The THSCA Academic All-State Teams recognize high school athletes who excel in GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT score. The students are being recognized as a team member based on their scores in these categories.”

The website said head coaches of respective sports could nominate a senior athlete, trainer or manager that is in good standing with the team, of good moral character and has an overall GPA of 92 or above. The academic all-state teams were split up in four levels: elite, first team, second team and honorable mention.

Katy High School had five student-athletes make the elite team, four made the first team, 10 made the second team and 17 more earned honorable mention.
