Colin Willetts is getting more comfortable as the quarterback at Jordan.
The sophomore signal caller came into this year as a first time varsity player, just like every player at Jordan, but he has made big strides throughout the year.
“This whole team has my back and they have everyone’s back on this team,” Willetts said. “My receivers make plays, the offensive line blocks perfect and gives me so much time in the pocket and our defense is getting better every single day too. We all are getting better.”
This entire year has been about learning and getting better for Jordan, which is in its first varsity season. The team has continued to grow and prepare to take the next step when they join a district, in all likelihood an all Katy ISD district, next year.
“It’s everyday, they just keep getting better, it’s crazy,” said Jordan head coach Mike Rabe. “We’ve actually been able to see kids get bigger and stronger during football season. It’s been fun to watch and their football execution has gotten better and better every week.”
The Warriors improvement was on full display on Saturday at Legacy Stadium, as Jordan beat San Antonio Davenport 42-21.
Jordan had played Davenport earlier in the season, losing 52-45, and the team wanted to make a statement facing them for a second time.
“This was our time,” said running back Ifeanyi Monye. “I knew we were going to beat them the second we walked into the stadium. I just knew we were going to win.”
Jordan marched down the field on its first drive of the day and took the lead on a 14-yard throw from Willetts to Andrew Marsh. Jordan doubled its lead in the second quarter, when again Willetts hit Marsh for a 26-yard touchdown pass.
Davenport responded with two straight touchdowns but Marsh got Jordan back in front by returning a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. But Davenport again tied it going into halftime by completing a hail mary.
The freshman Marsh had a strong day, catching seven passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns to go along with his kick return. Connor Babin also had a strong day, catching four passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
“They make great plays on the ball,” Willetts said. “I can just throw it up to them sometimes and I know they are going to make a catch.”
Jordan pulled away to start the second half and the defense came alive, not allowing another score in the entire game.
Monye broke the tie when he took a handoff 57-yards for a score on the Warriors first drive before Willetts hit Babin on a 56-yard strike alter in the quarter to put the Warriors up two scores.
Willetts sealed the game late in the fourth, when he ran in a 20-yard touchdown.
In all Willetts threw for 232 yards and rushed for 60 while accounting for four of Jordan’s touchdowns in the win.
“He knows the offense well and knows how to execute it,” Rabe said. “The defensive stuff is starting to slow down for him now and he’s recognizing some things. His play has continued to improve every week.”
The team was glad to end their season with a win and knows there will be work to done over the offseason to prepare for next year when they join a district and are competing to get to the playoffs.
“It was big to get this win,” Rabe said. “The kids really over the past month and a half have worked really hard every day in practice, every meeting and every weight room session and to see it pay off for them down the stretch is big. We have a long way to go still, we need to have a really good offseason and really good spring ball. We know what we’re up against coming into this district, so it’s really important to have this momentum rolling into it.”
