Interim no more, Hicks named head football coach at Paetow

Paetow officially removed the interim tag off of David Hicks Sr.’s head coach status on Wednesday, as Katy ISD officially announced Hicks as the schools next head football coach and campus athletic coordinator.

Hicks took over as the interim head coach at Paetow in October after the resignation of Lonnie Teagle, and guided the Panthers to a 2-2 record over the teams final four games, as the team played very admirably over the final stretch of the season and bought in to their new coach.

Hicks has 11 years of coaching experience and has served as an assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, track and field coach, strength and conditioning coach and powerlifting coach over his years in public educations.

Hicks played in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs before joining Sharpstown High School in Houston IS as a teacher and coach in 2011. From there he moved to Westside High School in 2014 before joining the Morton Ranch football staff from 2017 to 2021 and working himself up to being the defensive coordinator.

Hicks joined the Allen coaching staff in 2021, becoming the assistant head coach of the football team before coming back to Katy ISD in 2022, joining the Paetow staff in the same capacity.

Hicks holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and minor in Kinesiology from Grambling State and also earned a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University.

Hicks impressed during his time as interim head coach, taking over the team in a chaotic time and guiding them admirably through Paetow’s final four games, as the Panthers completely bought in to Coach Hicks and the shaken up Paetow coaching staff, played hard the entire rest of the season and were not eliminated from the playoffs until the final night of the regular season.

It was obvious from the start that Hicks was the players choice for becoming the full time head coach at Paetow and the Katy ISD Athletic Staff and school board agreed. Hicks will immediately take steps to get his team ready for the offseason and spring, as the Panthers will be busy replacing a very talented senior class that is graduating. But Paetow still has plenty to work with, with lots of talent returning and a players on both sides of the ball still remaining from 2021’s state championship team.
