The city of Katy announced today that Republic Services, the city’s trash services vendor, is temporarily stopping heavy trash pickup due to a 30% increase in regular garbage volume. The increase and resulting service change is a result of residents staying home during social distancing associated with COVID-19.
“This increased volume per set-out is causing trucks to fill faster which slows service. Additionally, Republic Services is experiencing a diminished work force. This temporary service suspension is to ensure that your household garbage and recycling can still continue through this unprecedented situation,” the city’s statement said.
Residents are encouraged not to use recycling containers for household waste which can contaminate recycling loads and may lead to recycling services being suspended as well, the statement added.
Mulching of leaves and grass clippings and limiting trimming of greenery can help, city officials said. Additionally, landscaping companies should be encouraged to haul off the waste they create.
