Lovie Smith knows how important it is for a team to have co have consistency from year to year.

After having two different coaching staffs over the past two years, the Texans head coach wanted to make it as smooth of a transition as possible for the players as he starts his first year as the teams head coach.

But with that he also gave an opportunity that’s been a long time coming.

Pep Hamilton was promoted from quarterbacks coach to the offensive coordinator for Houston, after a year in which he helped to develop third round pick Davis Mills into one of the best rookie quarterbacks in the 2021 class.

“It was important for us to keep Pep Hamilton on board,” Smith said. “For us to have that with him being able to work together two years in a row with Davis Mills and I’m pumped up that he’ll be leading us and we’re excited about his future.”

Hamilton worked his way up the ranks and has had success developing quarterbacks at every level. As the offensive coordinator for the Colts, he helped develop Andrew Luck into one of the elite at the position, he did the same with the Chargers, guiding Justin Herbert through his rookie year as quarterback coach before the joined the Texans last season and guided Mills development.

Hamilton will continue to coach quarterbacks while he coaches the offense.

“"Pep has an expertise when you look at his background," Smith said. "What he did in Los Angeles with (Justin)Herbert to where he did with Davis [Mills] here. He is a fundamental coach who has a defensive mentality on toughness. I am so excited about him being on our staff and to see what he is going to do."

Smith will continue to be in charge of the defense and will call plays along with being the head coach.

“When you look around right now, most of the offensive guys who get hired as head coaches, they still call plays,” Smith said. “For some reason a lot of the defensive guys don’t. But I think I can help our program the most right now with me in that same role, so I will be doing that.”

Frank Ross will return as the teams special teams coordinator for the second straight season, while Sean Baker returns as the teams assistant special teams coach.

Also returning is DaNarius McGhee (offensive assistant), Danny Barrett (running backs), Ben McDaniels (wide receivers/passing game coordinator), Ilir Emini (defensive assistant/nickel) Dino Vasso (cornerbacks), Ben Dolling (defensive assistant), and Miles Smith (linebackers).

New additions are George Warhop (offensive line), Hal Hunter (assistant offensive line), Ted White (offensive assistant/quarterbacks), Robbie Picazo (offensive assistant), Jacques Cesaire (defensive line), Kenyon Jackson (assistant defensive line), Joe Danna (safeties) and Dele Harding (defensive assistant).
