Game changers: Panther prowess - Jordan White sets standard both poolside and in Paetow’s classrooms

Setting new personal records (PR), finishing near the top of his class, establishing a culture at a young program – these factors pushed Paetow High School senior swimmer Jordan White to new heights this season. Competitive in the water and disciplined in the classroom, White is building a legacy defined by excellence, leadership and confidence.

A standout student-athlete, White recently earned the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Academic All-State Second Team honors and ranks in the top six percent of his graduating class. He balances a demanding academic load with morning swim practices and multiple extracurricular commitments, all while serving as a steady presence for his team.

Driven by quest for PRs and a trip to regionals, White approached this season ready to leave it all in the pool. His drive for academic excellence also makes him a model student athlete. He is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Rho Kappa. He also competes in the Technology Student Association competition, where he advanced to state competition after earning second place in on demand video at the regional level. In the biotechnology competition, his team researched bioconjugation (a chemical technique used to couple two molecules, with at least one being of biological origin), producing a formal report, poster and presentation.

Balancing it all requires discipline for Paetow swimming’s Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) representative.

“Having swim practice in the morning helps a lot,” White said. “After practice, I have the rest of the day to focus on schoolwork and other activities. It’s about knowing I need to get this done before I can do that. Swim has really helped me with time management.”

In the pool, White is known for his intensity and drive to improve. Outside of it, he is respected for his character.

“Jordan has grown into an incredible swimmer and an even better leader over his high school career,” Assistant Swim Coach Jennifer Garanzuay said. “He’s the rare athlete who is as committed to his team and his studies, as much as he is to his own times. I’ll always value the quiet humor he brings to the pool — he has a way of making even the toughest morning sets better just by being there.”

White credits his coaches with helping him grow in confidence.

“They’ve had a big impact on my self-esteem,” White said. “One thing that stuck with me was, ‘Believe in the him who believes in you.’ That gave me an extra push in my races to strive to meet expectations.”

That internal drive traces back to his father, who first encouraged him to pursue swimming. “My dad was the first one to push me to do this and believe in me,” White said.

Highly competitive by nature, White wants to leave a measurable mark at Paetow.

“The legacy I want to leave is my times,” he said. “I want to be someone others strive to beat. When they break my records, that means the program is getting better.”

Academically, White plans to major in chemical engineering and hopes to attend a university with a strong engineering program, such as Texas A&M or The University of Texas. Whether he competes at the collegiate level remains undecided, but he aims high.

“If I compete after high school, I’d want to compete at the Division I level,” White said.

Paetow Diving Coach Wafa Manning said White’s leadership stands out just as much as his performance. She believes White’s impact goes beyond individual results.

“He is a natural leader,” she said. “He consistently shows up for swimmers and divers alike. If we need help at an event or with the team, I know he’ll be there. He’s dependable, and he genuinely cares about others.”

For White, the formula is simple: compete relentlessly, manage time wisely and believe in himself. That mindset continues to elevate both his performance and Paetow’s swim program, one race at a time.
