Cougars have 10 named to all-district baseball

Ten members of the Brazos Cougars baseball club were honored with all-district honors including three first-teamers, four second-teamers and the defensive player of the year in District 28-2A.

Dalton Herrera, a Southwestern Christian University commit, was voted by district coaches as the defensive player of the year in his final year with the Cougars. In addition, he also earned academic all-district honors.

Brazos had a representative at each position on the first team with junior Kaden Kneip registering one of four selections for pitchers, classmate Kolton Marek was one of six in the outfield and senior Luke Demny earned a spot on the first-team infield. All three of them were also honored with academic all-district distinction as well.

The four second-team representatives also had good enough grades to earn academic all-district added to their nominations. Nick Oliver, a junior, was one of four pitchers on the team, classmate Kody Ressler earned the nod at catcher while Ray Valdez and Coltin Frayard took their place in the infield of the second team with the latter earning the honor as only a freshman.

There were also two Cougars who were honorable mentions; Jared Demny, who also earned academic all-district, and Julio Reyes, who will both return to bolster Brazos’ team for next year.

That 2020 squad will look for its third bi-district berth in a row after third-seeded Brazos fell two games to none to Thorndale in this year’s opening round.
