“Four Chaplains” to be commemorated on February 3rd
A service to commemorate the Four Chaplains who modeled great faith, courage and selflessness during the sinking of the U.S.A.T. Dorchester February 3, 1943, during World War II will be held Saturday, February 3rd from 2 to 4 p.m. at Living Word Lutheran Church, 3700 S. Mason Rd., Katy. Of the 902 men aboard the Dorchester, only 230 survived. When there were no more lifejackets in the storage room, the chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young men. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains–arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers. “It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of
heaven,” said John Ladd, another survivor who saw the chaplains’ selfless act. The ceremony is being hosted by American Legion Jonathan D. Rozier Post 164 in association with the Four Memorial Chaplains Foundation, 22nd District Department of Texas American Legion, the Marine Corps League Detachment 324, Corporate Chaplains of America and Network In Action Veterans Business Force.
