The City of Katy asks residents and businesses to continue using daily water conservation techniques in order to reduce water usage during current extreme heat conditions, according to a recent post on the city’s Facebook page.
The city offers these quick tips on how to lower water usage:
- Lawns only require about 1” of water per week - preferably ½” of water twice per week
- Purchase a rain gauge or irrigation rain sensor to monitor rainfall and adjust your irrigation accordingly
- Keep grass about 3” tall during the summer - tall grass holds moisture better and will eliminate the need to water frequently
- Don’t water when it’s windy out
- Over-watered lawns will have a short root system and will not be drought tolerant
- Design a water-efficient landscape by planting drought-tolerant grass and choosing plants that are native to Texas climate conditions.
- Check French Drains for excessive water due to over-irrigation.
