The Cinco Ranch High School Marching Band and its 230 members) are finally headed to the UIL 6A State Marching Contest—the first time in 21 years.
This comeback story is particularly dramatic because of last year’s heartbreak. In 2024, the band placed fifth at the Area contest, which historically guarantees a spot in the state competition. However, due to a last-minute disqualification of another band that reduced the number of competing bands, the cutoff line was adjusted, and CRHS was devastatingly cut at the fifth spot.
Instead of giving up, the students returned stronger. This year, they placed fourth at area, securing their long-awaited ticket to State and sparking a massive show of support across Katy. Even rival schools like Seven Lakes, Katy High and Morton Ranch have stepped up to cheer them on, demonstrating incredible community spirit.
Prior to the state competition, which was held Monday, November 3, after the Katy Times went to press for this issue, the band held a final free community performance on November 2 at Legacy Stadium before loading the buses for the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The Cinco Ranch High School Cougar Band is under the direction of Ray Jones. The assistant directors are Brian Stevens, Danny Rivera, Alex Russell and Samantha Cockerham. Drum majors are Layla Hansen, Bridget Hughes, Tony Cardenas, Savannah Penny, and Lumi Sato.
