As British International School Houston celebrates its 25th anniversary, the school is marking this milestone with a community-wide initiative that reflects its long-standing commitment to developing compassionate, globally minded leaders. This year, students are leading a bold challenge: contributing 25,000 hours of service across the academic year.
That’s an impressive goal for the 1200 students in grades PK through 12 who attend the school located at 2203 N. Westgreen Blvd. in Katy.
A legacy of leadership and giving back
“For 25 years, BIS Houston has been dedicated to academic excellence, global learning, and meaningful community connection,” a school spokesperson said in a January press release. “In honor of this landmark year, the school’s Student Leadership Team is spearheading the 25,000-hour service initiative — an ambitious effort that goes far beyond the number itself. This challenge embodies the school’s ethos: empowering students to grow into confident, caring leaders who understand the importance of giving back and driving positive change.”
Service that builds character
Throughout the year, students will engage in a diverse range of service projects, both locally and globally. These efforts are intentionally designed to be inclusive, student-led, and impactful, the release said. “From supporting families during the holidays to organizing donation drives and collaborating with community partners, students are demonstrating that true leadership is rooted in empathy, responsibility, and action.”
A culture of warmth and purpose
Service is deeply woven into the identity of BIS Houston. Over the years, students have contributed time, energy, and creativity to support organizations focused on education, community outreach, and emergency response. Their efforts have helped shape a culture centered on kindness, global citizenship, and purposeful action.
“In addition to supporting the community, these experiences equip students with real-world skills — planning, communication, teamwork, resilience — that prepare them for success far beyond the classroom,” a spokesperson said.
Looking ahead: 25,000 hours of impact
To guide this year’s service journey, the Student Leadership Team — Emma, Mia, Nathalie, Owen, and Amelia — is developing strategies and opportunities for students across all year groups. The initiative invites every student, from Early Years to Year 13, to contribute in ways that reflect their interests, passions, and strengths.
Whether through small acts of kindness or large-scale service efforts, each hour contributes to a collective legacy that honors the school’s past while shaping its future.
Environmental impact through local partnership
As part of this year’s service journey, students will also take part in a hands-on environmental initiative with Harris County Precinct 4. Through this partnership, BIS Houston volunteers will help plant 1,000 trees to support local reforestation and enhance green spaces—giving students a meaningful opportunity to contribute to Houston’s environmental future. The students are supporting a tree planting in Precinct 4 on February 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Addicks Reservoir.
