Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union has donated $500 to the music department at Schmalz Elementary School located on Barker Cypress Road between Morton and Clay Roads. Due to the sub-freezing temperatures the week of Feb. 14 a pipe busted in the school’s music department, causing flooding and damage to at least two classrooms, a BVSCU press release said.
“Over two decades' worth of musical instruments were stored in the closet where the damage occurred,” said Charlotte Gilder, principal at Schmalz Elementary. “The district has been working around the clock to make repairs to the classrooms and save as many instruments as possible.”
Gilder expressed her appreciation for BVSCU’s support of the music program at Schmalz and said she was happy that they continue to partner with the district during difficult times.
BVSCU Vice President of Marketing Shellye Carpenter said the credit union is glad to be able to help and support music education in the community.
“Music education provides unique opportunities for literacy preparation and is an important aspect of providing children with a well-rounded education,” Carpenter said.
Anyone wishing to support the recovery of the Schmalz music program may reach out to Gilder at 281-237-4506.
