In Southeast Texas, the arrival of fall isn't always announced by changing leaves or crisp mornings. Sometimes, it arrives with families making weekend plans, seasonal decorations appearing around town and local makers unpacking boxes filled with products they have spent months creating.
For many families across Katy and Greater Houston, one of those early signs of fall is the Autumn Acres Gift Market, returning September 12–13 to the Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center in Katy.
The two-day market brings together small businesses, artisans, makers and shoppers for a weekend that has become part shopping trip, part family outing and part celebration of entrepreneurship.
Walk through the aisles and the variety is easy to see: fall and holiday décor, boutique clothing, jewelry, gourmet foods, handmade goods, artwork, gifts and seasonal items.
But the more interesting stories are often found behind the tables.
One booth may represent a business that began at a kitchen table. Another may belong to an artist who has spent months preparing inventory. Down the aisle might be a husband-and-wife team building a family business or an entrepreneur traveling from another Texas community to introduce a new product to Katy shoppers.
Those personal stories are part of what continues to distinguish community markets from the increasingly digital way Americans shop.
Online shopping may offer convenience, but it cannot easily duplicate a conversation with the person who designed a piece of jewelry, created a recipe, built a product or turned a hobby into a business.
That connection has been part of Home for the Holidays Gift Market since its first show in 2008. The organization will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027, and during those years thousands of vendors and shoppers have participated in its markets.
Autumn Acres has become one of the traditions growing out of that history.
For families, Autumn Acres also arrives at a natural transition point in the calendar.
School is underway. Football season has returned. Thoughts begin turning toward cooler weather, decorating, entertaining and the holidays ahead. Shoppers looking for fall inspiration often find themselves starting Christmas lists at the same time.
This year's market will be held entirely inside the air-conditioned arena at the Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center, 5825 Katy Hockley Cut Off Road, Katy.
Doors will be open Saturday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
General admission is $5 and is good for both days, while children 12 and younger are admitted free. Parking is free, strollers are welcome, and tickets may be purchased online or at the door.
Frequent visitors to Home for the Holidays markets also have the option of purchasing a $15 VIP Lanyard, which provides admission to multiple events throughout the season. In the Katy and Greater Houston area, those include Autumn Acres, the Katy Christmas Gift Market at the Merrell Center, two Rosenberg Gift Markets, the Humble Gift Market, two Houston-area spring markets and the new Dream Living Home Show at the Merrell Center on January 23–24, 2027.
