AREA SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Katy’s Taylor verbals to Texas A&M

Four-star recruit and Katy High junior defensive back Bobby Taylor verbally committed to Texas A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 24. Taylor totaled 33 tackles with nine pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and an interception for the Class 6A-Division II state champs last season. Taylor, the son of former Notre Dame and Philadelphia Eagle standout Bobby Taylor Sr., is also a gifted returner. Taylor joins fellow junior teammate Malick Sylla, defensive end, as top-tier prospects for the Aggies for the class of 2022. …

Tompkins senior fullback Sherman Smith verbally committed to play for Jackson State University and head coach Deion Sanders on Saturday, Feb. 27. Smith, a Class 6A all-state second team selection, compiled 644 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns with 150 receiving yards and two more touchdowns last season for the Falcons. …

Six Katy ISD football players were named to the Bayou Bowl all-star game West team on Thursday, Feb. 25. Selected to play were Tompkins defensive back Temisan Alatan, Morton Ranch linebacker Samuel Hampton, Katy High offensive lineman Bill Katsigiannis and defensive lineman Cohen Dearman, Paetow defensive end Agumba Otuonye and Taylor receiver/cornerback Tyrone Irving III. Bridgeland’s David Raffield will coach the West team. Klein Cain’s James Clancy will coach the East team. The game will be played June 12 at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown. …

The Katy girls basketball and girls soccer programs gave back to their community through service last week. On Thursday, Feb. 25, the Tigers’ basketball players put together and taped boxes, unloaded two U-Haul trucks filled with water, food, diapers, cleaning supplies and other necessities, and bagged rice and food to help anyone suffering loss because of the winter storm two weeks ago. Church of the King distributed those goods last weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 27, the Tigers’ soccer players assisted with the Feed the Hunger organization. …

Seven Lakes’ girls soccer team is ranked No. 10 in Class 6A in this week’s Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings.
