Strong field headed to Katy for Katy ISD/Cy-Fair Volleyball Classic

Posted

The states best will descend upon Katy this week.

Every year it seems that the Katy ISD/Cy-Fair Volleyball Classic brings in state powers as they hope to compete and prove themselves against strong teams in the Katy ISD and Cy-Fair school districts.

And this year will be no different, with four teams who made last year’s UIL state tournament taking part in the tournament.

San Antonio Brandeis, the Class 6A state champs, returns to the tournament, while Bridgeland, which made it to the state semifinals will also compete in the tournament. Canyon, which made the 5A semifinal returns as well, as does Bellville, which made the state semifinals in Class 4A.

Brandeis returns a very strong squad and are the returning tournament champs, while Canyon won the tournament in 2019.

Overall there will be 48 teams competing in the tournament, with more than 30 of them making the playoffs last season. The tournament will take place from Thursday through Saturday at Katy ISD and Cy-Fair ISD schools.

Katy is expected to be a force in the tournament, as they return a number of key players and are coming of back to back regional final appearances. The Tigers were ranked No. 8 in the preseason Class 6A Texas Girls Coaches Association poll. Brandeis was ranked No. 1 in the poll while Bridgeland was ranked No. 7, Canyon was ranked No. 4 in 5A and Bellville was ranked No. 3 in 4A.

Tompkins is also expected to be one of the top schools in the Houston area, as they have a strong returning class and talented newcomers. The Falcons come off a district championship and an regional quarterfinal appearance, and they seem poised to be able to make noise once again in the district and area.

Seven Lakes looks to build into a strong group after a season which they had many newcomers last year and the Spartans do have a strong offensive group back with Temi Sam-Olibale and Sameena Burns.

Then there’s Cinco Ranch. Last year as a very young team, they managed to make their way to the regional quarterfinals and they feel that this year they can push further and make it to the regional tournament for the first time since 2018 and also compete for a district title. The Cougars return many key pieces from last years successful season and will be a fun team this year.

Paetow will also be a tough out and they have a number of talented players on their squad, and are out to prove themselves with the jump to 6A. Mayde Creek, Morton Ranch, Jordan and Taylor will all also compete and hope to make some noise.

The tournament will be even more important to Katy ISD schools this year with nine teams competing in the district, as now the teams only have two weeks of non-district play.

Teams will play through divisions to get to the final bracket, before things break up, with the top four advancing to the gold bracket.

Katy, Taylor, Tompkins, Cinco Ranch, Bridgeland, Cy-Woods, Cy-Fair and Jersey Village will host the matches before Bridgeland hosts the gold and silver brackets. With the tournament concluding on Saturday.
