Man in custody following homicide investigation

(FORT BEND COUNTY, TEXAS) – The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office (FBCSO) placed Austin Mapes, 18, in custody for Criminally Negligent Homicide.

On August 22, 2024, at approximately 11:06 pm, FBCSO deputies were dispatched to the 3000 block of Bent Grass Drive in Katy, Fort Bend County, Texas, regarding a victim with a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival, deputies found an 18-year-old male deceased inside the residence. The investigation revealed the victim, James Wisniewski, was a guest at the residence.

The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner’s Office performed a postmortem examination and listed the manner of death as homicide.

A warrant for Criminally Negligent Homicide was obtained by the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office. Subsequently, Austin Mapes turned himself in to the Fort Bend County Jail where he was booked on the charge. His bond has been set at $100,000.

"This is truly a tragic incident," said Sheriff Eric Fagan. "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time."
