Week 10 Katy ISD Previews: Cinco Ranch, Morton Ranch meet with playoff spot on the line

District 19-6A

Taylor (2-7, 1-4) vs. Katy (8-0, 4-0), 6 p.m., Legacy Stadium

  • Taylor was officially eliminated from the playoffs last week with a loss to Cinco Ranch and the Mustangs will face arguably their toughest game of the season against Katy. Taylor has a bye to end the season, so this will be the team’s season finale and Taylor will want to end the year on a high note. But that will be very tough for a defense that has struggled and an offense that has relied on the run game, with Katy’s stingy defense.
Katy on the other hand comes off it’s by week and still got an accomplishment last week as they secured a playoff spot last week despite having the week off. Katy hoped to use the time to get healthier and has a pretty light schedule to end the regular season, playing Taylor and then Morton Ranch to finish things before the playoffs start. Caleb Koger is almost to 1000 passing yards on the year and Seth Davis already has 1157 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns this season and Antonio Silva leads the team so far with 20 receptions for 387 yards and six touchdowns. A win would clinch at least a share of the District 19-6A title for Katy.

District 19-6A

Seven Lakes (5-3, 2-2) vs. Mayde Creek (2-6, 0-4), 6 p.m., Legacy Stadium

  • Seven Lakes has a chance to secure a playoff spot this week with a win over Mayde Creek and a Cinco Ranch win over Morton Ranch. The Spartans are sure to take this game very seriously with a matchup with Cinco Ranch waiting next week. The Spartans come off a 44-0 loss to Tompkins last week in which the team could get nothing going on either side of the ball. The Spartans could only muster 42 yards on the ground and 49 yards through the air in the loss. The Spartans will look to bounce back and use a strong run game to pound Mayde Creek as Seven Lakes has done when they have success this season.
Mayde Creek is out of playoff contention but will look to play spoiler and get the teams first district win against Seven Lakes. The Rams come off a 43-17 loss to Morton Ranch in which the offense showed signs of promise but the defense was unable to stop the Morton Ranch run game. Tay’Shawn Wilson made an impact on both sides of the ball, playing in the secondary while also rushing for 83 yards and catching three passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Kelly continued his strong senior season, hauling in five catches for 116 yards and a touchdown and Carldell Beard showed promising signs, throwing for 237 yards and two touchdowns, but also throwing two interceptions. Mayde Creek will look to improve defensively against the run and be more efficient.

Cinco Ranch (5-3, 2-2) vs. Morton Ranch (4-4, 2-2), 7 p.m., Rhodes Stadium

  • This will be the game of the week, as one team will clinch a playoff spot while the other will be forced into a very tough matchup to end the regular season. For both teams it’s very simple, a win and you are in, and that will be the goal for Cinco Ranch, who won’t want to put everything on the line in a final week matchup against Seven Lakes. It has been a huge turnaround for Cinco Ranch this year, who won just one game last season, and a win to clinch a playoff berth would be the icing on the cake. Cinco Ranch comes off a big win over Taylor and will look to use their high power passing game and strong defense to again come out on top.
As important as this game is for Cinco Ranch, it is even more important for Morton Ranch, a win and they are in just like the Cougars, but unlike the Cougars, a loss and the team is knocked out of playoff contention. With a loss, both Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes would own the tiebreaker over Morton Ranch, leaving the Mavericks eliminated from playoff contention heading into the final week of the season. Morton Ranch has leaned heavily on running back Santana Scott this season and will need another big game for the junior. He already has 1092 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns and the team will feed him as much as they can while also using the playoff action with Josh Johnson. Morton Ranch will need to be good in the secondary which is something they struggled with against Mayde Creek, but the Mavericks will throw everything they have at this game, hoping to clinch a playoff spot.

District 10-5A, Div. I

Paetow (8-0, 6-0) at. Manvel (6-2, 5-1), 7 p.m.

  • This is the game Paetow has been waiting for all season, as a win over Manvel would give the Panthers at least a share of the District 10-5A Division I championship with a week to go in the regular season. Paetow comes off a huge win over Hightower and will look to keep its dominance going against Manvel, but that will not be an easy task.
Manvel’s one district loss came to Hightower, but the team has continued to improve as the season has gone on. Manvel has a very strong run game, led by running back De’Monte Seymore, the senior has 1062 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns already this year and Manvel also has three other players with over 100 yards rushing this season. In the pass game, junior quarterback Kaeden Smith has been steady and efficient but hasn’t put up amazing numbers as he has 701 yards and six touchdowns to just one interception on the year. The Manvel defense has also been very strong this season. Paetow will try to continue what it has done all season, keeping teams off balance offensively and shutting the run game down on defense.

Jordan (1-6) at Pieper (1-3), 7 p.m.

  • Jordan comes into this week with a 1-6 record in its first varsity season and will play host to Pieper, another young team with no district. Jordan has lost five straight and will look to bounce back with a team that has had a good mix of pass to run this season and a steadily improving defense.
