Katy’s Jeremy Manibog took home a gold medal on Saturday night, claiming first place at the Class 6A state wrestling tournament for the 165-pound weight class.
Manibog earned the state title with a pin of McKinney Boyd’s Cameron Girard late in the first period to complete his undefeated season. He led the way for Katy ISD at the state wrestling tournament as the only gold medalist.
Katy ISD also had four different wrestlers claim silver medals at the meet, as Cinco Ranch’s Richie Walsh, Jordan’s Garrett McChesney and Katy’s Juan Pablo Garcia and Rodney Turner all made their way to state title matches, before falling to eventual state champions.
In total, Katy ISD had seven different medalists at the event, as they also had two bronze medalists in Cinco Ranch’s Kate Knight and Katy’s Abby Fonseca. As both won their third place bouts to make the medal stand.
After having four wrestlers make their way to the medal stand, Katy head coach Vinnie Lowe was also named the National Federation of State High Schools Texas Wrestling Coach of the year.
