Brazos softball earns four all-district honors

The Cougarette softball team from Brazos High School garnered two first-team all-district selections, one second-team, as well as the newcomer of the year after clinching their fourth bi-district berth in a row.

Brazos finished fourth in District 28-2A and earned the final playoff spot thanks in part to the newcomer of the year, freshman Caitlyn Snedaker, who contributed from the outfield, pitcher’s circle and the plate.

Also helping the Cougarettes to the postseason for the fourth consecutive season from the pitcher’s circle was first-team selection Allie Gonzalez, who will return next year for her final season in hopes of extending that playoff streak.

Joining Gonzalez on the first-team in what was her last go-around was Katherine Ressler, who held things down in the infield all year.

Plugging in at multiple positions for Brazos was Jessica Buford, who was honored with second-team utility status as a sophomore.

On top of that, those four athletes were joined by more teammates in earning academic all-district distinction with Meagan Demny, Laura Durrett, Maddie Kneip, MaKinzy Kneip and Mikayla Wrenn filling out that list of Cougarettes who got it done on the diamond and in the classroom.

The end of the road for Brazos came at the hands of the Thorndale Bulldogs who carved their way all the way through the brackets to the 2A State Championship at McCombs Field at the University of Texas at Austin.

There, the host Crawford Lady Pirates used a three-run fourth and a four-run sixth to tie the game at seven and ultimately send the game to extra innings where they scored the eighth and winning run to clinch the top prize last Thursday.
