Bankston, Panthers recognized in all-district selections

Paetow’s football season did not end how it desired, with its area round playoff game canceled because of COVID-19 cases within the Panthers program, but its success this season was rewarded when the District 10-5A, Division I selections were recently released.

Bankston, Panthers recognized in all-district selections

Paetow’s football season did not end how it desired, with its area round playoff game canceled because of COVID-19 cases within the Panthers program, but its success this season was rewarded when the District 10-5A, Division I selections were recently released.

Competing in one of the toughest districts in the state in Class 5A, Division I, the Panthers went 5-1 in district play and finished third behind champion Manvel (4-0) and Richmond Foster (4-1). Hightower (2-2) finished fourth.

Paetow senior running back Damon Bankston earned Offensive Most Valuable Player. Bankston rushed for 747 yards and eight touchdowns in six district games.

Terry senior quarterback Kellen Stewart was named the district’s MVP and Foster senior defensive tackle Tyler Onyedim was named Defensive MVP. Special Teams Player of the Year was Manvel senior returner Davyon Henderson. Newcomer of the Year was Hightower junior receiver Kaleb Johnson. Coaching Staff of the Year went to Manvel.

Three Panthers were named to the all-district first-team offense, six were named to the first-team defense and two were named to the first-team special teams.

On offense, senior fullback Randle Kelley, senior lineman Demetrius Elko and junior lineman James Bailey were first-team selections. On defense, senior tackle Andrew Rutherford, senior end Agumba Otuonye, sophomore inside linebacker Alex Kilgore, sophomore outside linebacker Daymion Sanford, junior safety Kentrell Webb and junior cornerback Michael Jordan were named to the first team.

Junior kicker Anthony Fuentes and sophomore returner D.J. Johnson were recognized on the first-team special teams.

On the all-district second team offense, Paetow junior receiver Kole Wilson, senior tight end David Murray and senior offensive lineman Johan Campos were honored. On the second-team defense, junior defensive end J.J. Johnson, junior linebackers Sultan Bakare and Tyler Silves, senior defensive back Carl Simon and junior defensive back K.J. Truehill were recognized.

Paetow had two selections on the second-team special teams in senior deep snapper Ian Lyon and junior returner Kentrell Webb.

Three Panthers were selected as honorable mention picks. They were junior quarterback C.J. Dumas Jr., and senior offensive linemen Sammy Almendares and Nicolas Mercado.
