Robert Dudley Koy, M.D.
Dr. R. Dudley Koy passed away on July 13, 2024. He is survived by his devoted wife of forty-nine years, Barbara Joan Bynum Koy, their son, Jason Bradley Koy, his wife, Gabrielle Anne Sitomer Koy, their grandchildren, Ashlyn Rose Koy, Landon James Koy and Callan Reid Koy, as well as his sister-in-law, Cathye Wells Koy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Arthur Koy, his mother, Doris Wilks Koy, and his brother, Malcolm D. Koy.
Dudley was born in Blythe, California on March 3, 1949. Most of his youth was spent with his family in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a 1967 graduate of Franklin High School in New Orleans. He graduated from LSU-New Orleans in 1970, then attending LSU Medical School where he graduated in 1974. He completed a Medical Internship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas before completing his residency and a fellowship in Pathology at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital, in Houston Texas. Later, in his fifties, he completed an MBA at Houston Baptist University. He worked in Pathology for over forty years as the Chief of Pathology at the Katy Hospital, later Memorial Herman Katy Medical Center, where he was twice the Chief of Staff. He retired as a partner from Brown and Associates Medical Laboratories in July of 2021.
In 1972, while he was participating in a medical school externship, Dudley met his future wife, Barbara, at the St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where she was the Charge Nurse in the Coronary Care Unit. He moved to Houston in 1974 to begin his residency. They were wed in Nashville in 1975. In 1978 they were blessed with the birth of their son, Jason.
Dudley and Barbara were dedicated to family. He participated in the Boy Scouting life. Being the recipient of the Eagle Scout badge, he was justly proud when his son, Jason, followed his dad in gaining the same honor. He was an avid fan of his grandchildren, watching them compete in Horsemanship, Baseball, Soccer and Lacrosse. Callan and Landon were drafted into the Professional Lacrosse League’s National Youth Tournament later this year in Baltimore, Maryland. He also proudly watched all three grow to prominence within the Arabian Horse Association, as they garnered multiple Regional and National Championships.
Aside from the Grandkids, Dudley and Barbara’s main passion was travel. Barbara and Dudley began their wanderlust by traveling with his brother Malcolm and wife Cathye. A list of their trips could fill a travel log, with multiple trips to Africa, Europe, the Arctic and Antarctica. Dudley loved taking expedition cruises. Their last sojourn was to Scotland on a river cruise through the Caledonian Canal a month before he passed away. His stories and critiques of their journeys were legendary. Which dealt with just who Dudley was.
His sense of history and civilization made the discussions of their trips all the more enjoyable. He was an avid reader and his ability to retain what he read was impressive. His stories and his ideas on life, people and places were always told with his very dry sense of humor. His answers were quirky and delivered with the wink of an eye and a slight smile. He enjoyed philosophizing on religion, history and, at times, politics. Enjoying the world’s cuisine with an expert’s view on Cajun food and strawberry milk shakes was his forte. His knowledge of wines was quite impressive. He and Barbara appreciated the good life that a lifetime of studious work in Pathology had brought to them. He was sharing to a fault. He was truly a man for all seasons and will be missed by so many.
