Katy ISD named its head coaches of the year last week, with coaches from all across the district being honored for their achievements last school year.
There were two head coaches of the year both on the girls and boys side, with Taylor’s Tonya McKelvey-White and Mayde Creek’s Mareon Lewis sharing the honors as girls head coaches.
Both are head track and field coaches and had great showings last, with Mayde Creek winning two gold medals at the state meet and Taylor sending a number of athletes past district and too area and regionals.
On the boys side, Seven Lakes Jimmy Krueger and Jordan’s Jason Meekins were named the head coaches of the year. Both soccer coaches led their teams to the state semifinals last season.
Krueger guided Seven Lakes to a district title before going through a very tough region IIII, eventually falling in the state semifinals. Meekins guided a Jordan team with zero seniors through the Class 5A Region III playoffs to get to the state semifinals as well.
Katy head athletic trainer Dr. Eddie Smith was named the Katy ISD/Charlie Stevens athletic trainer of the year for his work with the Katy high school athletes and coaches this year.
For assistants, Mayde Creek’s Steve Reese, Jordan’s Bobby Courtney, Seven Lakes David Tandy and Mayde Creek’s Sedalia Ellis were named the assistant coaches of the year. Mayde Creek had it’s best ever season in boys basketball last year, with Reese being a big part of the staff. Courtney was part of Jordan’s state semifinal staff and Tandy was part of the staff that led the Spartans to a district championship last season. Ellis helped Mayde Creek through a season in which it saw success.
For junior high coaches, Adams Junior High’s Brittny Thomas and Morton Ranch Junior High’s Taqueta Braxton were named the girls coaches of the year while Adams Junior High’s Kyle Mueller and West Memorial Junior High’s were named the boys coaches of the year.
Mayde Creek’s softball program was awared with the community service recognition award after logging 896 hours of community service last year, and Tompkins was given the Academic Improvement award, which is given to the school which shows the largest gain of athletes making all A’s and B’s throughout the school year. And Cinco Ranch was given the Academic Excellence award for having he highest percentage of student-athletes with all A’s and B’s throughout the school year.
