Katy ISD Chief Financial Officer Christopher J. Smith has been elected Vice President of the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) Board of Directors, a significant statewide leadership role with a leading professional organization for school finance and operations. KISD made the announcement on March 23.
Smith was elected by TASBO members ahead of the organization’s 2026 Annual Conference. He previously served on the TASBO Board of Directors after first being elected in 2023. Under the organization’s officer succession structure, Smith will serve one year as vice president, followed by terms as president-elect and ultimately president in 2028.
With more than three decades of experience in finance, Smith oversees all financial operations for Katy ISD, the fifth largest district in Texas by enrollment. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for responsible financial stewardship, strategic resource management and long-term fiscal sustainability that supports student success, the district said in its press release.
“I’m honored by the trust TASBO members have placed in me to serve in this role,” Smith said. “School finance professionals play a critical role in supporting public education, and I look forward to working alongside colleagues across Texas to strengthen best practices, advocate for responsible financial leadership and ensure districts remain focused on serving students and communities.”
During Smith’s tenure as CFO, Katy ISD has earned the TASBO Award of Excellence in Financial Management every year since the program’s inception. The district has also received top honors in financial reporting from both the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) and the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).
Smith is a Registered Texas School Business Administrator (RSTBA) and serves as Chair of the Federal Advocacy Advisory Committee for the Association of School Business Officials International. He was also recently recognized by GFOA for Outstanding Public Service.
TASBO Executive Director Tracy Ginsburg praised Smith’s leadership and expertise.
“Christopher’s expertise in school finance and governmental accounting has been invaluable to TASBO and public education,” Ginsburg said. “We are fortunate to have him as a leader.”
TASBO supports school business and finance professionals across Texas through professional development, advocacy and leadership programs designed to strengthen the financial and operational health of public-school systems.
