Fort Bend County Sheriff’s deputies Friday arrested a Houston man who allegedly threatened the Fort Bend County Fair on social media.
The sheriff’s office said its emergency communications center received a 911 test message, saying that an unknown person made an Instagram post appearing to threaten the fair. The post received wide exposure on Instagram.
Deputies identified the Instagram account user as Javon Otis Jackson, who admitted to making the post. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jackson and charged him with Terrorist Threat—a Class B misdemeanor.
Jackson is in custody at the Fort Bend County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
“We have zero tolerance when it comes to the safety of our citizens and visitors,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said. “If anyone has any suspicions concerning someone making a threat of any kind, report it to local law enforcement immediately.”
The arrest came after the sheriff’s office said, earlier in the week, that it would be patrolling the fairground every day of the fair, which runs through Oct. 2.
Common occurrences at the fair are theft, a lost child, or a fight. Fagan said everyone must do their part to make this year’s fair a safe, fun, and secure one.
“It’s easy for children to get separated from their parents, so keep an eye on your children. Have a designated checkpoint in case you get separated and know where the “lost child” center is located,” Fagan said. “The fair midway can get crowded and become a haven for pickpocketing thieves, so be aware of your surroundings. And remember, if you see anything that’s suspicious, say something. If it’s an emergency, call 911. Our deputies will be there to help you.”
Sheriff’s deputies have helped with traffic control and will be available to anyone who needs assistance.
"Our deputies will peruse the fairground throughout each day of the fair,” Fagan said. “We will be here for our citizens and visitors as always.”
