Cinco duo of O’Brien, Martinez named District 19-6A Co-MVPs

Kassie O’Brien and Gabi Martinez took home Co-MVP honors out of the district after helping Cinco to their best ever season. The duo helped lead the Cougars to an undefeated district title, a Region III-6A title and an appearance in the state title game.

Cinco duo of O’Brien, Martinez named District 19-6A Co-MVPs

Cinco Ranch had a historic year in volleyball this season and were represented for it in this year’s District 19-6A All District team.

Kassie O’Brien and Gabi Martinez took home Co-MVP honors out of the district after helping Cinco to their best ever season. The duo helped lead the Cougars to an undefeated district title, a Region III-6A title and an appearance in the state title game.

O’Brien finished the year with 1385 assists, 388 digs, 137 kills, 22 blocks and 25 aces. Martinez had 523 kills, 436 digs, 39 assists, 23 blocks and 15 aces as both made a huge impact for the Cougars.

Jordan also placed two on the superlatives list after a strong season where the Warriors made their first ever playoff appearance and taking one seed Ridge Point to five sets in the bi-district round. Leah Hoss was named the outstanding setter in the district after a senior year where she had 461 assists, 110 digs, 41 kills, and 29 aces while Jordan head coach Jennifer Vaden was named the district’s coach of the year.

Seven Lakes was the third team to place two on the superlatives list, with Sameena Burns being named the outstanding hitter of the year and Megan Chapman being named the newcomer of the year.

It was a big year for the Spartans, reaching the Region III-6A Final despite a third place finish in district. Burns had 361 kills, 201 digs, 30 aces and 10 blocks,  while Chapman had 603 digs, 109 assists and 41 aces on the season.

The final player on the all-district superlatives list was Tompkins’ Brooklynn Merrell, who was named the defensive player of the year after helping the Falcons to a second place finish in district and a regional quarterfinal appearance. Merrell had 496 digs, 134 assists, 102 aces and six kills on the season.

Tompkins led the way on the district’s first team, placing Erica Dellesky, Caelyn Dumas and Callie Funk there, while Katy, Jordan, Seven Lakes and Taylor each had two on the first team, Katy with Kennedy Pike and Cameron Steger, Taylor with Vanessa Erie and Julia Porath, Seven Lakes with Temi Sam-Olibale and Simone Romriell, and Jordan with Ava Ribakovs and Ella Koch. Cinco Ranch’s Makenna Loo rounded out the first team.

Cinco Ranch, Taylor and Seven Lakes all put three on the second team. Cinco Ranch had Aranna Willis, Shae Rainosek and Emily Killam, Seven Lakes had Heidi Wingate, Gracie Hobin and Kate Huen, and Taylor had Madison Barrera, Hannah Fan and Ally Campbell. Jordan added Emmy Nicholas and Abbie O’Shay, Katy added Jade Adams and Montgomery Henderson, Tompkins had Christian Cowart, Paetow had Arayla Scranton, Mayde Creek had Raquel Cortez.
