Katy ISD announced on June 10 that Beckendorff Junior High placed third in the middle school division of the 2024 Science Olympiad, held May 24-25 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The district was also represented by Seven Lakes High School, which finished 12th in the high school division.

Beckendorff is no stranger to the competition, placing within the top 10 nationally each year over the last dozen years, and in 2014, the team earned first place in the middle school division.

This year’s contest included 120 junior high and high school teams from across the country. Only four teams advanced to the national competition from Texas, and Katy ISD remained dominant this year, sending two of the state’s four teams.

“We are so proud of the teams at Beckendorff and Seven Lakes for their continued participation in the Science Olympiad," said Joan Otten, Director of Gifted and Talented & Advanced Academic Studies. "Out of more than 7,000 teams that begin competition each year across the nation, these students and coaches regularly advance to be among the very best.”

The Science Olympiad, one of the nation’s most prestigious science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) competition, is comprised of more than 20 individual events, testing students' knowledge of life sciences, computer science, anatomy and health, astronomy and other science fields.
