Paetow (3-4, 2-3) vs. Seven Lakes (1-6, 1-4), 6 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: did not play
· Paetow is in a must win situation.
The Panthers fought admirably last week against Cinco Ranch, putting up a tremendous defensive performance and bringing everything they had for 48 minutes despite going through an exhausting, tumultuous week leading into the game.
Paetow stayed in the game for three and a half quarters and held Cinco Ranch to a season low in passing yards, but in the end it wasn’t enough as the Panthers fell to 2-3 in district player, tied for sixth and a game back of the fourth and final playoff spot with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Paetow’s defense did everything they could in the game, holding Cinco Ranch to 141 yards passing and forcing the Cougars into three turnovers.
Offensively, Paetow went back to its roots, running the I formation and the teams run game largely benefitted from that, with Damyrion Phillips running for 112 yards and a touchdown, Alex Kilgore running for 70 yards and a score and Jamarious Bates rushing for 35 yards. But the Paetow pass game continued to struggle, as they gained 95 yards through the air. With that result, Paetow will probably need to win out the rest of the way to make the playoffs.
Seven Lakes meanwhile, also fell back into the loss column this past week, coming up short against Jordan despite a strong showing.
Seven Lakes was never able to get the ground game going, rushing for just 83 yards in the loss, and had to rely on the pass game, which got them 147 yards.
On defense they struggled mightily to contain Jordan, giving up just under 500 yards of total offense and were unable to force turnovers that cold have turned the game around.
The Spartans are playing for pride at this point, and will need their defense to step up this week, while their run game will need to be at its best to compete with a stout Paetow front seven.
Mayde Creek (2-6, 0-6) vs. Tompkins (5-2, 3-2), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Tompkins 72, Mayde Creek 7
· Mayde Creek’s struggles continued last week. As they fell to 2-6 on the year after a loss to Taylor.
The Rams pass game had success on the night with sophomore quarterback Cole Jensen at the helm, as he completed 14 of 23 passes for 128 yards, but three interceptions turned what would have been a good stat line into a bad day for the quarterback. The run game continued to be an issue for the Rams, as they averaged three yards per carry while rushing for 98 total yards. But it was defense where the team had its most trouble, as Taylor managed 310 yards on the ground and completely controlled the game from start to finish.
Tompkins meanwhile, had a dominating performance against Morton Ranch, as all three phases showed up and shut down Morton Ranch in the win.
Tompkins needed only 250 yards of total offense to score 55 points. Caleb Komolafe led the team on the ground with 64 yards while Wyatt Young rushed for 58 and Caleb Blocker had 42, and Tompkins needed only 73 yards through the air as their dominant defense forced three turnovers and the Falcons also scored two special teams touchdowns.
The win was the Falcons third straight and moved them into a tie for third place in district with Jordan. The Falcons are looking for another this week, that would move them even closer to clinching a playoff spot. Mayde Creek is looking to put a good end point to the season in the last three weeks and set themselves up for future success.
Friday
Jordan (4-2, 3-2) vs. Taylor (3-4, 2-3), 6 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Did not play
· Jordan put together another good game last week, using a very strong offensive performance to top Seven Lakes and keep themselves among the top of the pack of contending playoff teams.
It was another efficient and strong day for Colin Willetts, who threw for 250 yards and completed 10 of 14 passes for three touchdowns, averaging 25 yards per completion. Andrew Marsh continued to prove himself among the best receivers in the district, catching five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown while Zechariah Sample had 93 yards receiving and a score. Ifeanyi Monye had 110 yards rushing while Chad Gasper had 82 yards and a score on the ground, while the Jordan defense did its job in limiting the Seven Lakes run game as the Warriors were able to pull away for the win in the second half.
Taylor also kept themselves in the playoff hunt by beating Mayde Creek, but will have a very hard road the rest of the way, facing Jordan and Katy in two of the teams last three games and needing in all likelihood to win out the rest of the way.
It was the Taylor run game that led the way for them over Mayde Creek, as they combined for 310 yards on the ground, with Dante Archie rushing for 164 yards and two touchdowns and Joe Jefferson rushing for 106 yards and another touchdown, while Jefferson added 58 yards and two touchdowns through the air. The Taylor defense also had a big day, limiting Mayde Creek to just over 200 yards of total offense in the game.
this will be a game of opposing styles, as Jordan will try to play fast with an explosive offense and Taylor will try to slow things down, ground and pound in the run game and keep that Jordan offense off the field for as much time as possible.
Katy (7-0, 5-0) vs. Cinco Ranch (6-2, 5-1), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Katy 49, Cinco Ranch 3
· Katy has yet another chance at an undefeated regular season, and the Tigers biggest hurdle comes this week against Cinco Ranch.
But Katy is in a great position coming off its bye week and being fully rested for the teams biggest game so far this year.
Katy had a dominant outing in its last game, beating Paetow easily in a shutout. Dallas Glass was once again a strong point, running for 119 yards and two touchdowns and Seth Davis also ran for two scores. Caleb Koger threw for 199 yards, completing eight of 14 passes for two touchdowns to no interceptions, with Mocah Koenig having 84 yards receiving and a touchdown and Oliver Ginn catching two passes for 74 yards. And Katy’s defense was once again exceptional, as they held Paetow to under 100 yards of offense.
Cinco Ranch’s continued their win streak last week, with the Cougars defense stepping up in the teams worst passing game of the season.
The Cinco Ranch defense forced Paetow into two turnovers and limited the Panthers all night when they got into the redzone, inkling a fourth and goal stop. Meanwhile, Gavin Rutherford made up for a not great passing day and two interceptions by rushing for 192 yards and two scores to lead the offense.
The Cougars will need their offense to be back in sync in this game if they are to beat Katy while the defense will again need to be at its best. Katy will hope to pound Cinco Ranch with its run game and pressure Rutherford as Paetow was able to do last week, hoping that that will keep the talented quarterback at bay.
