Susan Rose Orr was born to Henry Harper and Rose Henry Harper on January 20, 1947, in Greenville, Mississippi. After attending elementary and high school in Greenville, Susan graduated from high school in 1965.
In 1968, while attending Delta State University, she met and married Henry David (Dave) Orr in August of that year. After graduating from DSU in 1970, she and Dave moved to New Orleans, LA, where Dave’s job with Shell Oil Company carried them. His career carried them from New Orleans to Midland, TX, and Houston, TX.
Susan’s teaching career spanned almost 30 years across the following venues: she taught Language Arts at Katy High School in Katy, TX,; Houston Community College in Houston, TX; Franklin High School in Franklin, TN.; Midland 9th grade in Midland TX, as well as high school at Brookshire Royal High School in Brookshire, TX.
Suzie's students won hundreds of writing and speaking awards (National and International) over her career. The Tennessee Legislature and Governor honored her for her teaching accomplishments as “Tennessee’s Ambassador of Goodwill”. Additionally, a day was designated as "Suzie Orr Day” in January of her retirement year in Tennessee.
Susan is survived by her husband, Henry David Orr; son, Michael Orr; sister, Alice Harper McGarrity and grandsons, Braxton and Jon Maikel. She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Harper and mother Rose Henry; and son, Greg Orr.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022 at the Schmidt Funeral Home East Avenue Chapel, in Katy. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Grace Anglican Church, in Katy, with The Rev. Robert H. “Bob” Henson officiating. Interment in Katy Magnolia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Suzie may be made to her educational sorority, Mu Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa to fund scholarships for future educators (a scholarship program Suzie strongly supported, including serving on the scholarship committee).
