Summer prep Q&A with Tigers head coach Gary Joseph

After a very successful 2020-21 football season with the Katy High School Tigers bringing home the Class 6A-Division II state championship, KHS Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Gary Joseph says he and his team are prepared to work hard and as a team to move forward with a similar level of success.

Q: Which student athletes are staying with the team for next year and what do they bring to help you continue the Tigers’ success?

A: The 2021 Katy Tigers return 24 letterman, including five starters on offense and six on defense. They bring a good work ethic, along with an unselfish attitude that will help them continue the success we have had.

Q: As incoming freshmen come into the KHS football program, what criteria will you be looking at for new members of the team?

A: I will be looking for athletes that have respect for the game and respect for the process of how to get better every day, as well as players who are not afraid of the great tradition of Katy High School.

Q: Katy’s football program saw an extraordinary season this last school year, but several of your seniors graduated. How will you work to continue the momentum of the last year to maintain the Tigers’ success on the gridiron?

A: Tradition and expectations at Katy High School do not change, ‘When Excellence Becomes Tradition, Greatness has no Limits!’

Q: What are your hopes for the seniors that graduated as they move into their college football careers?

A: The ones fortunate enough to play at the next level, I hope they remember their teammates that worked so hard to give them the opportunity and how we still expect them to represent Katy ISD in a positive manner.

Katy High School’s football team has several teammates returning in the fall according to a roster sent to the Katy Times by Joseph.

Outside linebacker Carson Marshall (Number 21) will be returning as a starter alongside quarterback Caleb Koger (Number 10), running back Isaiah Smith (Number 26), offensive linemen Caleb Webb (Number 73) and Dylan Erickson (Number 78). Defensive back Arian Parish (Number 6) will be returning as a starter as well with two Division I offers under his belt as recruiters continue to watch his on-field performance. Defensive lineman Cayde Robertson (Number 97) will also be returning as a starter in the fall.

Key returning players include Parish, Marshall and Koger as well as defensive back Hamilton McMartin (Number 24), defensive lineman Malik Sylla (Number 2), linebacker Ty Kana (Number 42), running back Seth Davis (Number 23) and wide receiver Nic Anderson (Number 4).

Joseph’s roster includes high expectations for newcomer to the team, Devin Garrison, an offensive lineman who will be sporting jersey number 74.
