Seniors Helping Seniors, a national organization with a new Katy franchise, has partnered with the City of Katy Fussell Senior Center, 5370 E. 5th St., to provide goods for Camp Hope, which provides treatments for veterans suffering from combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

Marvin Mendez-Wright leads the local franchise. On Monday, workers from both her group and Fussell Senior Center loaded up a truck with non-perishable goods for Camp Hope. Suzanne’s Band, led by Mia Suzanne Walker, provided the music.

“We’re just getting started here in Katy,” Mendez-Wright said. “We are hiring people.”

Seniors Helping Seniors is headquartered in Pennsylvania. It provides in-home services and includes hundreds of locations across the United States and internationally, according to its website, shskaty.org. Their caregivers are seniors themselves.

Among its services, Mendez-Wright said, is companionship care.

“We remind you take your medications, because we are not a medical group,” Mendez-Wright said. “We can help with grooming and dementia care. If they need to go out of town for the weekend (thus leaving a senior unattended), we can provide overnight care. We specialize in personal care and assistance for daily living. We supply as little or as much care as they need.”

While donations were due Aug. 25 for Monday’s shipment from the Fussell Senior Center, Mendez-Wright said Camp Hope is still accepting donations.

Needed items include bottled water, paper towels and toilet paper, twin sheets, alarm clocks, clear tape, postage stamps, fish oil and glucosamine.

“We are looking for things that people can store and that will not perish quickly,” Mendez-Wright said.

Those interested in making donations are invited to do so in one of two ways. They can shop on Amazon and make their donations through Amazon’s Smile program. Or, they are welcome to bring their donations to the Houston-area Camp Hope headquarters, 9724 Darrington Rd., in Houston.
