Wednesday evening’s thunderstorm and lightning activity caused two house fires in the Katy area, both of which were put out by firefighters from Harris County Emergency Service District 48 and other agencies.
Nobody was injured in either fire.
The first fire happened around 8 p.m. in a home in the 4100 block of Murano Gardens Drive, in the Ventana Lakes subdivision near the intersection of Clay and Peek Road. Firefighters from ESD 48 and Waller-Harris Emergency Services District 200 put out the fire.
The second fire happened about half an hour later, an ESD 48 spokesman said, in a home in the 800 block of Mountain Meadows Drive in the Heritage Square subdivision, near Peek Road. The lightning strike caused a nearby transformer to explode, causing power outages in the neighborhood. By Thursday morning, a crew was replacing the transformer.
