Katy’s Barr, Tompkins’ Spencer named Co District MVPs

Posted

Tompkins’ Macy Spencer and Katy’s Lyric Barr were named Co-MVPs of District 19-6A this year in girls basketball, after both helped their teams to the top two seeds in district and made playoff runs.

Spencer was named the Co-MVP after leading the Falcons to the regional quarterfinals for the second straight season. She was the guiding force behind the Falcons offense all year and showed why she is a Division I talent.

Barr took a huge step in her senior season, as she helped Katy make its first regional tournament and went from a first-team all-district player to a co-MVP and a leading force behind the Tigers winning a district championship.

Brianna Nelson joined Barr as a teammate on the superlatives list. Nelson, a senior forward for the Tigers this year, was named the district’s Defensive Player of the Year for her efforts. Nelson was the anchor of the tigers defense, which was one of the best in the state.

Those weren’t the only accolades the Tigers garnered this year, as Katy head coach Shanna Marhofer also was named the district’s coach of the year after coaching the Tigers to a district title, a 32-3 record and a regional tournament appearance for the first time in school history. It was a special senior class for Marhofer and she coached them to a historic season.

Justice Carlton was named the offensive player of the year for the district in a year where she battled injuries but still led the Spartans to the playoffs and an are round appearance. Carlton, who was named the district MVP last season as a sophomore, helped the Spartans overcome a slow start to the season and district, before they went on a huge run to make the playoffs and win in the bi-district round.

Madison Carlton, Justice’s younger sister, was named the newcomer of the year in the district, as she played an integral role for the Spartans as a freshman, making an impact both offensively and defensively and forming a formidable duo with her sister.

Following is the full District 19-6A All-District team.
