Katy area safe after Hurricane Laura veers north, striking the Lake Charles area

Posted

Hurricane Laura made landfall near Lake Charles and Holly Beach in Louisiana in the early morning Thursday and Harris County Flood Control Meteorologist Jeff Lindner reported that winds in the area gusted at sometimes well over 100 mph. However, despite concerns about wind in the Katy area that were forecast, the Katy area appears to have been left unscathed by the storm.

“Today our City Officials, staff, and residents awoke to no impacts from Hurricane Laura – we are extremely fortunate and grateful. Our thoughts and prayers are with the communities in Texas and Louisiana that have been impacted by Hurricane Laura,” the city of Katy posted to its Facebook page.

Measures put in place as safety actions before the storm are still in place with city of Katy recycling pickup for today and trash pickup for Wednesday have been delayed to Friday. Texas Pride will continue distributing trash bins in Katy as they continue to move toward taking over that service from Republic Services. Recycling in Fulshear was deferred to next week’s pickup yesterday as well.

Municipalities throughout the region remind residents that those who evacuated the coastal areas near Greater Houston may be travelling back home today and traffic may be heavy at times.

"We ask that you show a great deal of patience and hospitality if you may come into contact with those traveling to our area to avoid the storm," said Brookshire Police Chief Brandal Jackson via Facebook.

The Katy area forecast for today from the National Weather Service calls for a 20% chance of rain with partly sunny and hot weather with a high near 98 degrees and a heat index of as high as 104 degrees. Winds are expected from the west at about 10 mph.
