Jordan preparing for first varsity season

Posted

There’s a feeling of competition everywhere you look when you go to a Jordan practice.

With varsity competition on the horizon for this year, the Warriors are doing everything possible to put the best team on the field, and every freshman, sophomore and junior is fighting to get a shot at playing time.

“It’s getting intense between the offense and defense, said sophomore quarterback Colin Willetts. “The defense has been doing a great job and it’s just really fun to go back and forth with them.”

Willetts is in a battle with Deuce Barrington for the starting quarterback position, and the two have made the most of the opportunity.

“We’re great friends and we just push each other every day,” Willetts said. “We come out and do our best every day, we compete and knowing that the other one is there helps us be at our best.”

With no seniors and no players with varsity experience, the Jordan squad will need to learn quickly, but head coach Mike Rabe thinks they are up to the challenge.

“They’ve been doing good,” Rabe said. “They get it that they are competing against each other right now but there’s opponents coming up. They’re focused on that and getting better every day.”

Through his first year at the school, Rabe has built a culture of hard work at the school. The players have responded, and since last year have practiced with the same intensity, knowing that the end goal would be varsity games this year before district realignment next year gives the team a chance to play their way into the playoffs.

“They’ve been going hard since midseason last year,” Rabe said. “That’s kind of how they practice and operate. It doesn’t really change any, they aren’t really emotional, they’re just a really steady group.”

Rabe was happy with how the first week of practice is going.

“It’s always fun when football season starts up,” he said. “You look forward to it all year and it’s finally here. This is everything we have worked towards.”

With such a young group, Rabe is excited to get back on a regular schedule this year, barring any setbacks, and the players are excited for the opportunity in front of them.

“We have to keep pushing ourselves,” said freshman wide receiver Andrew Marsh “Keep working, keep getting better and pushing our hardest.”

“We keep focusing on each individual and pushing ourselves to get better and better,” Willetts said. “The most important thing is to focus on each other and keep fighting until we get to the end. Our first game is on the 27th and we are going to be ready, we’re all excited for it.”
