Joan Elizabeth Woods Watson passed away on Monday, January 25, 2021, at the age of 75 years.  She was born on March 3, 1945, in Houston, Texas, to B. Ray Woods and Charlotte Augusta Selma Woods.  Joan grew up in Brookshire, but lived in Katy the majority of her life.  On September 10, 1965, she married James E. Watson in Houston, Texas.

Joan was a nurse, mom, grandma, rice farmer, cattle rancher, and an airplane pilot who enjoyed flying her mom and dad over their rice fields to check on the water – she was proud of being able to do this because her dad never would let a girl drive a combine during harvest.

She was also a life member of the University of Texas Ex Students Association, a pharmacy owner and bookkeeper.  She loved UT football weekends at the Four Seasons in Austin, as well as trips to the Lajitas Golf Resort several times a year.

Joan enjoyed wine nights with Wendy, her visits with Bonnie and Carlie, barrel races with Bonnie and Carlie, and visiting Kirby in Austin.  She loved her trips to the ranch in Pattison, where she had a crazy fondness for feeding Girl Scout cookies to her donkey, “Flash”.  While at the ranch she would pet her adopted pit bull, “Buddy”, for hours while James did the feedings.

Joan sang in the Methodist Church choir for 60 years; she always had a smile on her face and will be missed by all.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, James E. Watson of Katy; children, Wendy and Paul Hanne of Katy, Bonnie Watson of Katy, and Kirby Watson of Austin; granddaughter, Carlie Cope of Katy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Beanie Woods, and Ralph and Karen Woods; sister-in-law, Margaret Woods; farm donkey, “Flash”, and her farm dog, “Buddy”.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Phillip Woods.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 2021, at the Schmidt Funeral Home East Avenue Chapel, in Katy.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2021, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Grand Parkway Chapel, in Katy, with Dr. Richard L. White and Rev. Edward Woods officiating.  Interment will be private.

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Elder, Jr., Jimmy Ross, Raymond Dollins, Neal Waxali, Doug Gilbert, JD Woods, Jr., Alton Kanak, John Williford, TJ Horn, Gordon Ginn, Doyle Callender, Allan Walker, Carey Crutcher, Jeff Handley, and Bill Hastings.
