The District 19-6A tennis tournament was held at Katy High on April 14-15, with Taylor winning the boys doubles and girls singles, Tompkins winning the boys singles and mixed doubles and Cinco Ranch winning the girls doubles.

In boys singles, Tompkins’ Charles Kuchler defeated teammate Mihir Amte in the final. Amte defeated Seven Lakes’ David Zhu in the playback to also qualify for regionals.

In girls singles, Taylor freshman Ally Lin defeated fellow Mustang freshman Jennifer Wang, 6-0, 6-0. Lin did not drop a game the entire district tournament. Wang defeated Seven Lakes’ Alisha Madhuvarshi in the playback.

In boys doubles, Taylor senior and 2019 boys singles state qualifier Cristopher Cequea-Rivero and junior Jonathan Lin defeated Seven Lakes’ Brian Ho and Sid Kumar, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Earlier in the day, Cequea-Rivero and Lin survived a scare in the quarterfinal to edge Tompkins’ Abhijay Setlur and Gavin Gibson, saving two match points in a comeback in the third set.

In girls doubles, Cinco Ranch senior Camila Matos and junior Kayla Wan defeated Tompkins’ Nathalia Ciliberto and Natalie Kha, 6-3, 6-0. The Falcons’ Ciliberto/Kha tandem qualified for regionals by beating Seven Lakes’ Nicole Tapia and Nicole Quijano in the playback.

The mixed doubles final pitted two Tompkins teams against each other, with Austin Xu and Ava Melaerts defeating Patrick Chen and Chloe Mason, 7-5, 6-0. Seven Lakes’ Marcos Bechtlufft-Cardoso and Lisa Knight beat Chen/Mason in the playback, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The tournament was played in adverse conditions due to inclement weather. On the first day, Wednesday, there was a three-hour delay due to rain, which prematurely ended the tournament around 7 p.m. that night. The boys doubles finally wrapped up the tournament around 10 p.m. the next day, Thursday.

The Region III-6A tournament will be April 27-28 at Deer Park High School.
