2 KISD principals honored as finalists for statewide award

Posted

Katy ISD announced via press release that two of its principals – Doreen Martinez of Memorial Parkway Elementary and William Rhodes of Bryant Elementary – are finalists for the Texas National Distinguished Principal award. The two are among five finalists statewide that are eligible to win top honors in May at the 2021 NDP gala in Washington D.C.

“Both Katy ISD principals are known to incorporate innovative ways of educating their students, even more so during the adversities associated with this past year’s COVID-19 pandemic,” said Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership and Support Dawn Carlson-Scruggs.

The Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association received 137 nominations for principals throughout the state for the Texas award. After a review process in which applicants shared information regarding their educational philosophies and professional accomplishments and a peer-review committee selected the finalists.

Statewide, Martinez and Rhodes were joined by principals Brian Gibson of Velasquez Elementary in  Lamar Consolidated ISD, Ben Perez of Taylor Ray Elementary of Lamar CISD and Raymond Stubblefield of Spring Shadows Elementary in Spring Branch ISD, according to the TEPSA website.

Martinez and Rhodes, along with the other finalists, will have the opportunity to present their achievements and their campuses during virtual school visits by a team of educators in the near future. The winner of the award will also receive a $10,000 award for their work.

Carlson-Scruggs said the district is glad to be well-represented in the competition.

“Katy ISD is known to have some of the best educators and school leaders in the nation, and we are proud to see the District represented at this event,” Carlson-Scruggs said.
