Royal ISD Operations Director Derrick Dabney explains plumbing infrastructure issues at Royal Junior High during an April 28 tour of the facility. The building is aging and needs serious infrastructure improvements to remain safely usable by students, faculty and staff. The urinals in the boys’ restroom have not been replaced due to plumbing problems under the building’s foundation that need to be addressed, Dabney said. RISD officials are hoping a $99.5 million bond will address these issues and allow the district to build two additional campuses to face upcoming growth of the student body.

As students return to Katy area campuses such as Seven Lakes High School in mid-August, many of them will be receiving additional instruction in areas of learning loss caused by the learning challenges brought about by the pandemic. Officials in both Katy and Royal ISDs said students’ State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness – or STAAR – test results had dropped, though not as badly as the statewide average. Additionally, a new law requiring additional tutoring to help students catch up will go into effect when school begins.

One of the classrooms used to teach engineering at the Royal STEM Academy used to be utilized as a shop classroom. No ceiling was ever installed in the room and the two students (in gray and orange shirts) said the noise from overhead ductwork and poor acoustics in the room often make it difficult to concentrate on projects.
