No. 3 Katy routs Dickinson as Tompkins clash looms

Katy High coach Gary Joseph wanted his team to come out of Friday’s matchup with area power Dickinson “a better football team.”

He got it, and then much more.

The No. 3 state-ranked Tigers dominated previously undefeated Dickinson, 49-7, at Sam Vitanza Stadium in Dickinson. The Gators were 2-0 and ranked No. 9 in the Houston area heading into the game.

The non-district game was abruptly rescheduled Thursday evening when it was moved from Saturday afternoon at Legacy Stadium to Friday evening in southeast Houston.

The move was made as part of a domino effect due to a COVID-19 outbreak at Seven Lakes High School this week. The Seven Lakes campus was temporarily closed Thursday afternoon, effective Friday until Tuesday. Seven Lakes’ football team had to reschedule next week’s game against Tompkins to Nov. 27. The two teams were supposed to play next Thursday, but with one day of practice available for the Spartans because of the suspension of athletics during the campus closure, that would not be possible.

So, Seven Lakes will have a second straight open week next week. Katy, meanwhile, was supposed to be open next week, but will now play Tompkins on Thursday in a much-anticipated District 19-6A bout that has been rescheduled four times because of COVID-19. As of now, Katy and Tompkins are tentatively scheduled to play 6 p.m. Thursday at Legacy Stadium.

All of that rearranging of the schedule led to the move of the Katy-Dickinson game, which obviously affected the Tigers not one bit.

Senior running back Jalen Davis scored a 69-yard touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and Katy never was threatened. Senior tight end and Texas A&M commit Fernando Garza scored on a 10-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Caleb Koger, sophomore running back Seth Davis scored on a six-yard run and Jalen Davis scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run as Katy held a 28-0 halftime lead.

With 7:23 left in the third quarter, junior receiver Nic Anderson hauled in a 15-yard throw from Koger. Koger scored on a 1-yard keeper with 22 seconds left in the third quarter and running back Ivy Bell scored on a nine-yard run with 24 seconds left in the game.

Katy outgained Dickinson 450-201 in total yardage. The Tigers had one turnover and committed just three penalties for 35 yards after committing 11 for 85 yards in a lackluster win the previous week over Cinco Ranch.

Koger completed 11 of 16 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. The Davis brothers combined for 243 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries. Anderson had 88 yards and a touchdown on four catches.

Katy’s vaunted defense limited Dickinson junior tight end and prized recruit Donovan Green to just four catches and 82 yards.

Now Tompkins looms next week for Katy. The Falcons are 5-0 and have shut out their last three opponents. Tompkins has outscored its opponents, 165-28.

The Tigers, too, are 5-0 and have outscored their opponents 243-44.

Katy and Tompkins have the best defenses, by far, in District 19-6A.

Tompkins fell to Katy 35-30 last season in what was the Tigers’ closest district game since 2013. Katy has won 75 consecutive district games.
