Katy locals Anthony Amoo and Joseph Cherwink will be competing on the upcoming season of LEGO MASTERS, premiering Monday, May 19 (8 – 9 p.m. ET/PT) on FOX, next day on Hulu.
The two are LEGO enthusiasts who will be competing in brick building challenges in the hopes of taking home a $100,000 cash prize, the ultimate LEGO trophy and the grand title of LEGO Masters.
Amoo and Cherwink are co-workers at Tays Junior High in Katy, where Amoo has coached for the past four years after previously coaching at Seven Lake High School. Cherwink is the band director at Tays. Both have lived in the greater Katy area for a number of years – Amoo for 25 years and Cherwink for 11 years. Amoo noted that, although he is not originally from Katy, his last high school football game was played against Katy High School.
LEGO Masters is their first competition. Both played with LEGOS in their younger years, they said in response to questions from the Katy Times. Amoo said, “I started working with LEGO as an adult almost 6 years ago. It was always one of my favorite toys as a kid. In 2018 or 2019, the itch just came back.”
“I played with LEGO a lot as a child,” said Cherwink. “As an adult, I got back into building things in 2023 once my son was old enough to play with LEGO. One day, I went and found my old childhood tin of mixed LEGO to share with him. Playing with him that day brought back all of my fond memories of building race cars, planes, and rocket ships! Things got serious when my friend Jason Maggitti, an art teacher at Rylander Elementary, introduced me to the Adult Fan of Lego (AFOL) community. After seeing some other MOCs (My Own Creations) at our annual Brick Rodeo convention, I tried my own hand at building and naturally gravitated toward creations featuring moving components made from LEGO TECHNIC.”
The duo got involved with the LEGO Masters show after Amoo started documenting his family’s love for LEGOS and their journey, and casting producers reached out to him. “I finally applied and, next thing you know, we were on a plane heading to a dream opportunity,” he said.
“Anthony had actually already been in contact with a recruiter for the show during 2023,” Cherwink said. “I was new to our LUG (LEGO User Group), and our mutual friend Jason realized that we both happened to work on the same campus. Earlier that summer we actually ran into each other at the Brick Rodeo summer convention, and we were both shocked to see each other with our arms full of LEGO boxes. Once Jason had matched us up, we were off to the races. There is an intense process to audition for the show with lots of build challenges and screen tests. We just worked our tails off and hoped for the best! We never actually imagined we would make it on! It just goes to show that you should always put yourself out there and bet on yourself!”
Filming for the episode took place in Atlanta. “The experience was beyond what I imagined,” said Amoo. “We were surrounded by great people; our castmates and the crew made the whole thing fun.”
And if they win that $100,000 prize?
Amoo said he will use the prize money for financial responsibilities and family fun, while Cherwink plans to invest it for his kids and to take a well-deserved vacation.
