State-bound tracksters honored at school board meeting

Every meeting of the Sealy ISD Board of Trustees begins with recognitions around the community and at the June meeting, it was the trio of track athletes that made it to the state championships in their event.

Senior Ivan Bolden (long and triple jump) and juniors Raegan Newsome (100-meter hurdles) and Luke Thielemann (discus) qualified at all the necessary meets to punch a ticket to Austin to compete at Mark A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin on May 11.

For Bolden, it was his second trip in a row which is exactly what jumping coach Dabney wanted for him.

“Last year we had a pretty good track team also and Ivan Bolden was one of the qualifiers in the long jump and actually finished third,” Dabney said. “This year, we tried to get him back in two events; it’s real hard to get there in one but he got back in two events and did a phenomenal job all year and it’s a long season starting in January running into May and not only did he (run track but he played) football and basketball so he never got a break so that’s just some wear and tear on his body but he did Sealy justice, did a great job in competing.”

Dabney then went on to explain a little about Newsome’s season and the surprise that greeted them following the competition at state.

“Newsome had shin splints real bad, we thought,” he said. “Ever since the area track meet we’d ice her and take it easy and she was still hurting, it even hurt to the touch so the week of state we were saying, ‘You need to get that checked out after this.’ She ran and did a great job, she got sixth and went to the doctors the following week and found out she had stress fractures so for the last three weeks she was running around on a broken leg and still made it to state.”

Finally, Luke Thielemann, who took third in the discus throw, was not able to be in attendance due to being at a camp at Texas A&M but Coach Montgomery made sure to also recognize the event-specific coaches that helped them all get there.

“I’d also like to recognize Coach (Russell) Dziadek who is our discus coach and Jeremy Phillips who was the hurdles coach,” Montgomery said. “I’d also like to recognize Coach Dabney, he was not only the head basketball coach but due to two of our coaches being pregnant at the same time during the track season he stepped in and didn’t blink an eye taking over as the head coach and never looked back. We are grateful for him as well as Coach (Shane) Mobley giving us the opportunity as well as you all to represent Sealy and the community.”
