Royal competed in the state 7-on-7 Division II bracket on Thursday and, competing in Pool B of the Division II bracket in College Station on Thursday before competing in Friday’s Championship bracket for a chance at a state championship.
Royal dropped their first game of Thursday in pool play to La Grange, losing 34-6 but bounced back quickly in their next game against Alvarado by winning 21-20. A lightning delay forced pool play to be finished on Friday morning and Royal performed at an even higher level in their final game of pool play, beating Austin LBJ, which had been undefeated going into the game 13-12 and clinching a top two seed out of pool play with a 2-1 record.
Austin LBJ also ended with a 2-1 record out of Pool B, beating Alvarado and La Grange before falling to Royal. Alvarado lost to Royal and Austin LBJ but beat La Grange, La Grange beat Royal but lost to Austin LBJ and Alvarado.
Royal earned a spot in the championship bracket, where they played Dumas and fell 20-6 in a tough first round matchup that ended Royal’s 7on-7 tournament. Dumas went all the way to the Championship Bracket final where they fell to Hamshire Fannett.
Hamshire ended up the winners of the Division II bracket, while Gunter won the Division III championship.
