On June 8, 1943, Myra Jo Putman was born to Joseph Caton Putman and Eva Gist Putman in Clarksville, Texas. When she was five years old, the family made the decision to relocate to Houston, and it was there that Myra grew up. Upon graduating from Galena Park High School, where she was a member of the Jacketeers Drill Team as well as the choir, she received scholarships for music and academics.  She graduated from East Texas Baptist University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She returned to her hometown to teach middle school reading and math. She sang in the church choir and was active with the Order of the Eastern Star.

In 1969, she met her husband, Donald R. Koehn of Houston. They married in 1970 and welcomed their daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth, in August of 1976. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Beaumont, Texas, and it was there that their son, Daniel Joseph, was born in 1978. The oil and gas industry moved them once again to West Monroe, LA in 1984, where she was blessed to continue teaching junior high students at St. Paschal’s Catholic School. In 1990, they made their final move to Katy, Texas. Myra taught Math at Memorial Parkway Junior High in Katy ISD for 20 years and was happy to retire in 2010 after a lifetime of serving students.

Myra was a devoted, life-long Bible scholar. She was a member of a Katy Women’s Bible Study Fellowship group and Women’s Bible Study at Memorial Lutheran Church. An avid music lover, she attended concerts ranging from Jon Bon Jovi to Josh Groban and everything in between. Myra loved being Nanny to James and Laurel, her dogs, her Bunco group, and gardening, especially her prized rose bushes.

Myra succumbed to Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease on August 4, 2021.

Myra is preceded in death by her parents, JC and Eva; her baby sister, Janet Ruth Clark of Katy; and husband, Don Koehn of Katy. She is survived by her daughter, Kate; son, Daniel and his wife Natalie Kubik, and their children, James Patrick and Laurel Janet; her brother, Caton Putman of Granbury, Texas; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and special family friend, Barbara Crowley. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Jasmine Hill, who was a devoted caretaker in Myra’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to PM Pals, a kids’ night out program for families of children with special needs. Donations can be made payable to St. Luke's United Methodist Church with “PM Pals” noted in the memo of the check.  You can mail your donation to St. Luke's UMC, P.O. Box 22013, Houston, TX 77227-2013.   You may also call 713-402-5026 to make a donation by phone.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Grand Parkway Chapel, in Katy, with Rev. John Nance officiating.
