Local organizations seek to raise awareness about domestic violence during October

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it’s a nationwide movement to raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on individuals and communities.

Two area nonprofit organizations are holding events to raise awareness locally during October.

Katy Christian Ministries will hold its annual “Silent Witness – A Night to Remember” ceremony on October 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Westland Baptist Church, 1407 W. Grand Parkway in Katy. Dinner will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required. Go to facebook.com/events/726651572910099/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[]%7D and click on “Find tickets” in order to reserve a spot.

“This special evening is dedicated to remembering the lives lost to domestic violence and recognizing the incredible community leaders who work tirelessly in this field,” according to a post on the KCM Facebook page.

HerWell, a Brookshire-based nonprofit which helps sexual assault survivors find hope and a voice, will hold its first annual gala on October 24 at Venue 116, 907 Bains in Brookshire. “A Night of New Beginnings” will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. and will feature a plated dinner, drink tickets, live music and auctions. The event will raise funds supporting the creation of a new shelter for domestic violence survivors in the Brookshire-Katy community.

“Attending this event, you are supporting the survivors of sexual trauma and domestic violence in Waller, Fort Bend, and Harris Counties,” said a statement on the HerWell website. “In Waller, Fort Bend, and Harris Counties, 186,743 Family Violence cases were reported in 2022.”
