Teams in six age divisions converged on the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex for TruXposur’s Texas Showdown 7-on-7 Championship last weekend but only one team per division walked away from the gridiron as champions.

The Destroyers represented Katy in the 12-and-under division and earned the necessary victories over teams from Texas and Oklahoma to be crowned champions of the 2020 Texas Showdown.

The championship-winning Destroyers squad will look to pick up another banner at this weekend’s Tournament of Champions hosted by PrimeTime Sports at Veterans’ Park in College Station on June 27 and 28.

The athletes that make up the Destroyers’ roster include Blake Hamilton, Braylon Stewart, Sebastian Cooley, Jovon Rodriguez, Ty Sexton, Patrick Spann Jr., Jack Greenwood, Joshua Garcia, Robert Haynes, Cade McCall, Jaeden Spelmon, Ja'Veon Tate, Jonas Johnson and Derek Stevenson. The coaching staff includes assistants Patrick Spann, Brandon Hamilton, Emile Sexton and Albert McCall and the head coach is Cornelius Cooley.

7-on-7 football is played without pads, except for softshell headgear, and focuses mainly on the skill positions of quarterback, running back and wide receiver against defensive backs and linebackers. The 7-on-7 field is about half the distance of a regulation field (45 yards) but is just as wide (160 feet).

Touchdowns are still worth six points but the point-after-tries can yield one point if attempted from three yards out or two points if attempted from the 10-yard line. Interceptions returned to the opposite end of the field are also worth two points.
