Katy-Tompkins game postponed to Nov. 27 due to COVID-19 case

The Katy High-Tompkins varsity football game scheduled for this week has been postponed to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, at Legacy Stadium.

The game, initially scheduled to take place Thursday, Oct. 15, had been moved to Saturday, Oct. 17, due to Katy ISD receiving a report Wednesday afternoon that a member of the Katy High football program had tested positive for COVID-19 and was on campus as of Oct. 13.

Members of the Katy High football program deemed in close contact with the individual receive direct notification from campus administration and are provided information to ensure their safety and well-being.

Following the report, all Katy High junior varsity and varsity football players were required to get a COVID-19 test, per district protocols. A negative test is necessary to practice or play in a game.

On Thursday morning, the district announced the game was re-scheduled again to Week 10 of the season.

In a statement, the district stated the following: “The rescheduled game to Week 10 will provide the Katy ISD Emergency Management team sufficient time to conduct contact tracing and ensure student-athletes and staff are cleared to continue practicing and preparing for upcoming practices and competitions.”

Tickets for the game originally scheduled for Oct. 15 will be honored at the rescheduled game Nov. 27.

This is the second known instance of COVID-19 cases affecting the Katy ISD football season.

Tompkins’ game against Clear Springs two weeks ago was postponed by one day due to three cases affecting the Tompkins program.

Katy and Tompkins had each entered this week 3-0 in the young season, 1-0 each in district play.

Katy's next game is against Mayde Creek scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 at Legacy Stadium. Tompkins' next game is against Taylor on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium.
